Re: Science news of the day thread.
Biofuels derived from agricultural waste, (such as straw of sugar cane after the sugar is extracted) makes a lot of sense, but taking up huge areas of land to grow plants specifically for biofuels puts pressure on both precious uncleared environment and land needed for crops. Algae grown in ponds may be part of the solution - more productivity per acre...

Burning spent cane is at least as old as making rum... it's easily combustible and makes cheap fuel for the stills.
still, aren't there ways to get sufficient heat without burning stuff?
as for algae... more productive, but still has to be dried before use, and may not be so good for the bodies of water selected for growing them...

There is the possibility of making methanol, and using this in a fuel cell. This produces CO2, which is concentrated, and can be reacted with ultramafic minerals to keep it out of the atmosphere. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a ... 4120301674Svartalf wrote: ↑Sun Dec 18, 2022 8:24 pmBurning spent cane is at least as old as making rum... it's easily combustible and makes cheap fuel for the stills.

Apparently the largest quantity of the absorptive mineral resides in the Arab pennisula.
It needs grinding up to be effective.

In the cane growing areas of Queensland, the spent cane is used, not only for heat in the sugar refining process, but to generate electricity, some of which is sold to the grid...Svartalf wrote: ↑Sun Dec 18, 2022 8:24 pmBurning spent cane is at least as old as making rum... it's easily combustible and makes cheap fuel for the stills.

Octopuses torture and eat themselves after mating. Science finally knows why.
—women are chaosMost likely, Wang said, the die-off protects the babies from the older generation. Octopuses are cannibals, she said, and if older octopuses stuck around, they might end up eating all of each other's young.
