Did anyone else read a book by Joe Bageant called Deer Hunting With Jesus? I read it a number of years ago, and stumbled across it on my bookshelf again the other day. And it hit me that he was all over the Trump phenomenon well before the rest of us. His book, written in 2007, was basically all about the Trump Deplorables, but in this case it was to do with re-electing G.W.Bush. I picked it up last night and read the intro again, and it's scary how he specifically predicted that these people would elect someone even worse than Bush if the Dems didn't get their heads out of their arses.

So this morning I decided to wiki him to see if he has written a book about Trump yet, but see that he died from cancer in 2011.

I'm re-reading a fantasy series called The Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher. A mixture of hard-boiled urban private investigator stuff with magical fantasy. Very readable, if you like that sort of thing...

So I asked a scientist who their favorite popular science writer is and if they could recommend a book by them. They said they don't read that kind of stuff. --well fuck me dead--

I just assumed everyone interested in science could name a few science writers and books by them they think everyone should read.

Maybe the scientist thought I meant Popular Science the magazine? --dunno

I love Popular Science, particularly ones from the 50s. Flying cars and death rays. Popular Mechanics is great too, they tell you how to build your own death ray out of old vacuum tubes, jumper cables, and surplus 2x4s. They're a must for the discerning post-apocalyptic survivalist.

I'm reading the Blood of the Isar, a two book series. It's pretty good, actually, fantasy based on the Norse pantheon.

Yeah, I can't imagine not enjoying at least just flipping through them. I can't remember the last time I saw either anywhere. I did run into a popular mechanics set of plans for a tiny boat several months ago online. They always had fun stuff to think about.

Every time I start looking at the site Mrs. Lak gets twitchy. Cool little 10 foot dinghy in there I'd like to build when our inflatable RIB finally pops it's seams.

When I was around 10, my Dad built a 10 foot dinghy in the garage. With a 3 HP Mercury, we used it for fishing for years and years. Good memories...

Stumbled on this wondrous biography of Josephine Baker. Not read too much yet, the illustrations are something to behold. She was pretty.

Shubin's other book. Not quite as good as Your Inner Fish. Parts are good. He gives credit to pioneering geologists.
