Halfway through the complete works of Jules Verne.

Re: What are you reading now? (Chapter 2)
Just finished 'On the Steel Breeze' last week. Have been a big fan of AR, 'specially the Revelation Space series. This one though... well, either he's running out of steam, or perhaps his editor is telling him to chop chunks out and stick to the plot. In many places, where one might expect to have things unfold and play out there's a rather discontinuous jump or a sketchy report ("And so, after that thing had happened..."), and even one amazingly blantant cop-out ("I have no recollection of what happened during that massive plot point other than a vague sense of it being something important") and I found myself going, "Oh, so you're not even going to bother then? We're just going to jump straight to the next bit then?" He's still very good on details, on working concepts through to their logical conclusion, on personal and political development, and on keeping things rolling along - the story is still packed with interesting ideas. Just felt a bit short changed.Feck wrote:Redemption Ark . Alastair Reynolds.
Nonetheless, will be reading 'Poseidon's Wake' sometime soon, but not until I've read this.

I've started reading Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. I like it. It's good.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

Imagine that. I guess it's only coincidental that you'd already be the perfect citizen in the ideal world you're selling.

I'm just nearing the climax of John Buchan's 1916 classic Greenmantle. Great boys-own ludicrosity.

Excellent! I've read most of the books that contain that set of characters - they were favourites of my anglophile father...Brian Peacock wrote:I'm just nearing the climax of John Buchan's 1916 classic Greenmantle. Great boys-own ludicrosity.

Re: What are you reading now? (Chapter 2)
- "It was a sound I had not heard for five months, and it fairly crazed me. I remembered how I had first heard it on the ridge before Laventie. Then I had been half-afraid, half-solemnized, but every nerve had been quickened. Then it had been the new thing in my life that held me breathless with anticipation; now it was the old thing, the thing I had shared with so many good fellows, my proper work, and the only task for a man. At the sound of the guns I felt that I was moving in natural air once more."

Re: What are you reading now? (Chapter 2)
He wrote many novels, but the group I'm thinking of involve Richard Hannay and friends. Before Greenmantle was The Thirty-Nine Steps, of course, then, in order, Mr Standfast, The Island of Sheep, The Three Hostages and The Courts of the Morning.
