http://australianmuseum.net.au/Black-Dr ... auer-1906/Dr. Peter Herring shows off a black Dragonfish. This deep sea fish, less than a foot long was found a 1000 meters deep, might communicate with luminous patches on cheeks.
The Black Dragonfishes are long, slender fishes which live in mesopelagic to bathypelagic waters down to depths of about 2000 m.
Hmmmm...looks familiar.

Re: Science news of the day thread.
The space elevator is a lovely idea. The diagram in Godzilla's reference is, I think, unrealistic. The elevator cable would have to be a wide ribbon to allow for space debris or other fast moving items that might cut it in half. A ribbon, if wide enough, could accept small holes in it without collapse.
The method of climbing it would have to be faster than anything we can make today, since the elevator would pass right through the Van Allen belts, which would kill any person exposed for very long. Perhaps a magnetic levitation method?

For every human action, there is a rationalisation and a reason. Only sometimes do they coincide.

What about a group of cables that would allow a meteor to push through.Blind groper wrote:The space elevator is a lovely idea. The diagram in Godzilla's reference is, I think, unrealistic. Indeed. Cables separated by gaps, calculated so that the probability of a meteor being big enough to snap two of the cables is acceptably low, would probably work well once we worked out [1] how to construct cables with the requisite tensile strength, and [2] how to construct them in place.

If there were clamps every few miles then a splice could be done by climbing up and sliding down from the clamps until the ends were captured.

In space elevators, no one can hear you fart.
