Also there:
-Is Musk an inside man, or just another mark?

-Both - isn’t it a common trick, to persuade the mark that they’re so clever (not difficult with Musk) that they’re the inside man? That is, until they find their wallet’s gone.
Musk will be given a position of power where he can look after his business interests and attack his competition.
Who wouldn't take that deal?

Trump rally
1. Savior and protector
Mr. Trump presents himself as the sole hope for what he describes as a lawless and violent country where inflation crushes families, crime

2. Insults
Mr. Trump’s language is crude when it comes to his political opponents. Ms. Harris is a “lunatic,” “mentally disabled” and “a Marxist, communist, fascist person.” Mr. Trump often mispronounces her name. Mr. Biden, meanwhile, is “crooked” and “doesn’t know he’s alive.”

3. Deceits
Mr. Trump lies often on the stump. Sometimes he is easily debunked — such as when he says the federal government isn’t helping Hurricane Helene victims. Other claims supposedly support his narratives of American decline, official incompetence or Democratic depravity — such as the blatant falsehoods that Democrats back executing babies or want undocumented immigrants to vote.

4. The hits
Mr. Trump has a few routines and set pieces he revisits at most rallies, to the audience’s delight. He likens migrants to the fictional cannibal Hannibal Lecter. He often spots familiar faces in the crowd and brings special guests onstage.

5. Political violence
6. The Trump agenda
The former president has plans. Some are concrete: He’d extend the tax cuts he signed in 2017 and end taxes on tips and on Social Security
benefits. Other promises are more vague, like his pledge to conduct a mass deportation of undocumented immigrants. Others still are tailored to his audience, depending on the state he happens to be speaking in.

7. Digressions
Mr. Trump’s rallies can be hard to follow. He skates from one topic to another, sometimes switching mid-sentence. Mr. Trump calls this “the weave”: “I’ll talk about like nine different things that they all come back brilliantly together.” But some thoughts have no connection to politics, like an aside at a rally last month in which Mr. Trump likened himself to Elvis Presley.

8. Anti-democratic statements
Mr. Trump is frustrated with many norms of our political system. He argues courts are rigged against him, falsely claims that Democrats stole the 2020 election, threatens to prosecute his political opponents and praises foreign dictators.

9. Stumbles
Mr. Trump’s verbal flubs seem to have worsened as he has aged. In the past year, he has mixed up Ms. Pelosi with Nikki Haley and Mr. Biden with Mr. Obama. He called Viktor Orban the leader of Turkey instead of Hungary.

10. Section F
Mr. Trump says he's going to fire c.50,000 civil servants on day one of his presidency, people he claims are operating a 'deep state', conspiring to stop him being elected and/or drawing up plans to thwart him if elected. Mr. Trump says he intends to personally appoint their replacements.

Good leadership has to resist the worst from its people. American politics encourages the worst.

We're just one surprise away from ruin. :crumple:

In any other western country, a politician who rambled in that fashion while seeking to be elected would be laughed out of public life, and would have no hope whatsoever of being elected.

But in America?

Trump to send goons to see if any foreigners are at your house. They can be identified because they have no papers.

Robert Reich
@rbreich@masto.ai
Undocumented immigrants are not raising the price of housing — far from it.

Over 1.5 million undocumented immigrants work in construction.

Scapegoating the undocumented for the U.S. housing crisis, when they're actively helping to fix it, is just plain wrong — and cruel.

He needs to show his work, specifically that their participation in construction offsets the rapid increase in the number of people competing for housing.

Here are a few papers that claim to find a link between immigration and higher housing costs. They mention other research that has found the same, in the US and elsewhere.

Round these parts the stupid prices and general unavailability of housing is blamed on the planning system, and the bogeyman immigrants of course. It's a global crisis. The issues are structural and go far beyond this or that political leader's ability to address via a changes in regulations or rounding up the darkies.

Inside the rally: pictures of Venezuelan migrants.
Trump: "I will rescue Aurora and every town that has been invaded and conquered," Trump told the crowd. "We will put these vicious and bloodthirsty criminals in jail or kick them out of our country.
