After being highly criticized for his “Black jobs” remark during the June presidential debate, Republican nominee Donald Trump revisited the phrase on Friday, appearing to attempt to clarify his comment.

Trump’s choice to re-work his remarks now may be the result of former First Lady Michelle Obama chastising the ex-president during this week’s Democratic National Convention.

In June, claiming there are “millions” of immigrants crossing the Southern border into the U.S., Trump had said, “they’re taking Black jobs now.” There are no “Black jobs,” but many took the opportunity to, as with other slurs, take the phrase back.

On Friday, at a campaign event in Las Vegas, Trump claimed, “they’re losing their jobs because Biden and Harris are allowing millions of people to come into our country, and they’re taking Black –’ he said, pausing, before adding, “people’s jobs.” Trump then immediately qualified it again by saying, “African-American jobs.”

“They’re taking those jobs. And a lot of those jobs are Hispanic jobs too.”

'Chastise' doesn't quite convey Ms Obama's skewering of the despicable gasbag: 'who’s going to tell him that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those "Black jobs"?'

I don’t think he’s drugged. I think he’s old like Biden. But unlike Biden, he never had any sort of intellectual rigor, and is having trouble pivoting from his long-used routine of Biden-abusing soundbites to attacking Harris, because she’s a lot tougher to land a punch on in general and he’s never really given her any thought.

Plus he’s still facing a number of court cases (and an imminent sentencing hearing) which is likely adding mental stress, especially as his plan to regain office to stymie those cases is looking less likely as Harris/Walz’s polls go up and his go down.

Diversity isn’t cheating
Many conservatives are worried that colleges will cheat by continuing to consider race. Admissions decisions, after all, are subjective, and colleges often know an applicant’s race even though there is no longer a box to check. An article in The Atlantic last year even urged universities to defy the Supreme Court.

But it would be a mistake to conclude that any college that maintains high diversity levels has broken the law.

The court’s decision explicitly allows colleges to weigh the effects of race. “Nothing in this opinion should be construed as prohibiting universities from considering an applicant’s discussion of how race affected his or her life, be it through discrimination, inspiration or otherwise,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote. The key, Roberts added, was that the student “must be treated based on his or her experiences as an individual.”
